STROUDSBURG -- For the next several days, our area will be hit with cold temperatures that we usually see in January.

About two thirds of the country is getting blasted with frigid air this week.

The air is spilling out of the Arctic and right into the lower 48

Auto mechanics are busy checking tires before the cold snap hits.

Kost Tire and Auto Center's general manager in Stroudsburg says the icy blast that's forecast can do a number on your car if you're not prepared.

"It does a lot to a car, especially if people aren't maintaining their vehicle properly, which is checking air pressures, making sure that batteries are going to stand up to extreme cold temperatures," said Kost Tire and Auto General Manager Derek Marshall.

Customer Richard Comers from Bartonsville stopped into Kost Tire and Auto  in Stroudsburg with a flat tire . He says he's making sure he's ready for the cold, and the winter ahead.

"Yes, safe, and you know, I don't want the issue if it sits for a couple of days and I come out and go, 'wow, the tire's flat,'" said Comers.

Workers say preventative maintenance can help protect you from these fluctuating temperatures. But if you're not careful, cold weather could come with a nasty price tag.

"Dead battery, flat tire, all the way to the extreme of an internal engine problem," said Marshall.

The forecast below-freezing temperatures are also making it difficult for folks working outside, trying to wrap up some big projects like this one.

"Biggest thing for us here is going to be, we're dealing with a lot of steel.  The steel gets frozen it gets icy, the icy sidewalks. There's always going to be the potential for that.  We're already set and planned to treat that as we need to," said project safety coordinator Robert Hartley.

Crews have been working to demolish the Carlton House on Main Street since late October, and have worked through sun, wind, and rain.  Now, they're bracing for bitter cold.

"This is crunch time, and now's when we need to get it done before the snow really flies and becomes a big problem for us," said Hartley.
