SHENANDOAH -- Fire officials in Schuylkill County are investigating a fire that displaced 22 people on Sunday afternoon.
The fire happened just after 3 p.m. along West Centre Street in Shenandoah.
Investigators say nobody was injured, but an apartment and two homes are a complete loss.
"It was pretty bad. It was all engulfed next door there and she was able to come out then," Jim Briel said.
Briel and his kids helped his mother-in-law save what she could from her row home.
She lived there for 27 years and lost nearly everything.
But in a time when losing all of your belongings might seem tough, what was saved was her angel collection.
"Pretty much all that was survived was the angels. Almost all of her angels and her holy pictures that were on the wall weren't even touched. So, we'll be able to get all of her holy relics out of there," Briel said.
Investigators believe the fire started in a vacant home next door.
After seeing the damage, neighbors are grateful the fire didn't spread any farther.
Jane Metcalf and her family live a few doors down from where the fire started. They watched the home go up in flames on Sunday.
"Scary because you didn't know if it was in my house or not because everything was just full of smoke and flames," Janet Metcalf said.
And while Metcalf's family didn't suffer any losses like her neighbors, she says that's because of the great work of firefighters.
"They did a great job. Kept it confined to that area. The whole block could have went," Metcalf said.
The American Red Cross tells Newswatch 16 they are assisting the 22 people displaced.
The American Red Cross says 15 adults and 7 children were impacted by this fire.
The Schuylkill County fire marshal and a state police fire marshal continue to investigate the cause of the fire.
