UPDATE - 6:30 P.M. --Newswatch 16 has just gotten word that the standoff in west Scranton has ended peacefully.

There's no word on the man's name, or what, if any charges he may be facing after this afternoon's standoff in Scranton.

SCRANTON -- Scranton police have had a section of Main Avenue shut down and the 1100 block of Jackson Street shut down since around 2 p.m. Friday because they say a man who claims to be armed has closed himself off in his apartment on Jackson Street.

Officers tell us a man called police, threatening to hurt himself.

Police say he told a family member that he would also hurt police.

Officers are not sure if the man has any weapons, but they are prepared if he does.

A SWAT team is in place and police have the apartment house surrounded  with guns drawn.

Meanwhile, traffic in the middle of west Scranton is at a standstill.

"I very rarely take Main Avenue in general and it's been pretty backed up all over, not just Main Avenue. Everything's blocked off," said Kayleen Holden.

"I think it's insane. Main Avenue blocked off on a Friday night is chaotic. Everybody uses Main Avenue and for it to be blocked off, it's like, 'what's going on?'" said Jeremy Wombacher.

We spoke to the daughter of the man who is inside the house. She told us the man has recently had some family issues come up that have made him upset. She told us she does not believe he is armed.
