PENN TOWNSHIP -- Veterans Day ceremonies were held all over northeastern and central Pennsylvania, but one near Selinsgrove was different.

More than 100 people gathered at East Snyder Park to see the Snyder County Veterans Memorial for the first time.

A Penn Township supervisor proposed the idea in May, and Pete and Cookie DeWire of Penn Township made it possible.

"It developed into what you see today," Pete said.

"Working with the veterans was such a pleasure. It's a special group and we wanted to make this as warm and personable as we could," Cookie said.

Organizers say they hope that because the memorial is located right behind a baseball field, younger people will take the time to look at it and appreciate our veterans.

"There's nothing like a veteran. We have to be so thankful for them," Cookie said.

Many veterans attended the ceremony, and enjoyed seeing the memorial for the first time.

"It's beautiful, beautiful. I mean, I know they were working on this for a long time," World War II veteran Carson Shrawder said.

"Well, it puts a big lump in my throat," Bill Hetherington said.

The memorial has bricks people can buy and personalize. Vietnam veteran Bill Hetherington bought two bricks -- one for himself and one for his father.

"You were there if your country needed you. You didn't run across the border and burn your draft card. They needed you and there you were," Hetherington said.

Organizers say the goal is to sell between 300 and 600 bricks at the monument. For more information, click here.
