HAZLETON -- Congressman Lou Barletta easily won a third term Tuesday night in the 11th Congressional District against Democratic challenger Andy Ostrowski.
However, he was unable to accept his victory at his campaign event at the Pines Eatery and Spirits in Hazleton.
Barletta underwent emergency surgery Monday night at Hershey Medical Center.
The former mayor of Hazleton had a routine test Monday when he was told he has developed plaque buildup in his right carotid artery.
A spokesperson for the campaign said that the congressman is doing just fine and resting comfortably following the surgery.
"It's not everyday you hope to get elected to congress," said Tim Murtaugh, Campaign Spokesperson. "We're sorry he has to be in the hospital for this, but the doctors know best at Penn State Hershey and they said he should get this taken care of so he did."
Campaign leaders added that one of the top priorities for Barletta will be continuing to secure the nation's borders.
