HOP BOTTOM -- A gas truck driver who couldn't make a sharp turn is responsible for a bridge closing in Susquehanna County, according to PennDOT.

It's on a road that's already seen its fair share of bridge trouble.

That bridge is on Station Hill Road, a short cut between Hop Bottom in Susquehanna County and Nicholson in Wyoming County.

PennDOT officials say a worker for a gas company hit the bridge's concrete wall with his truck. Now, the bridge may be closed for several weeks.

There's a sharp turn leading up to the railroad bridge on Station Hill Road in Hop Bottom. Maybe the worker driving a gas company truck didn't see it early Sunday morning.

PennDOT officials say he hit part of the bridge's concrete wall and sent the concrete about 40 feet over the edge.

The bridge is 99 years old and has seen plenty of wear and tear.

This prompted PennDOT to close the bridge so it can be checked out, leaving people who live on Station Hill Road without an easy way into Hop Bottom.

"Well, it's a little longer to go into town now. Now you have to go the long way instead of taking the short cut," said Hop Bottom resident Bill Taylor.

Complicating things, there's another bridge on the other side of Station Hill Road in Wyoming County that's also had some trouble. This bridge is down to one lane because PennDOT is repairing it.

People who live on Station Hill Road say it's not really a traffic concern. They're more concerned about fire and ambulance coverage on their road.

"Farther down this road the bridge is closed. You only have one lane that way. So if we're only going to have one lane this way, it's a little concerning," said Marlene Grubbs.

Grubbs says she knows these back roads well, as do her neighbors. The three-mile detour doesn't bother her. She's afraid it may bother her customers who come there for her antiques business.

"My first instinct was, because I have a business I run out of here on Saturdays and Sundays, I was worried because the GPS around here doesn't give you how to get here. That was my main worry."

PennDOT officials say it could be several weeks before the bridge hit by the gas truck on Station Hill Road is reopened and it's unclear yet whether PennDOT will pay for the repairs or the driver's insurance will cover the cost.
