A captain of the Penn State football team is hospitalized and the school announced that Ryan Keiser of Selinsgrove is out for the season with an injury.

Keiser is at Penn State Hershey Medical Center where Nittany Lions head coach James Franklin says he underwent operations for a bowel injury.

He also has a broken rib after being hurt at practice last week.

Keiser went to Penn State as a walk-on after being a standout at Selinsgrove High School in Snyder County.

He was our Super 16 Player of the Year in 2009.

He went on to be a captain and key player on the Penn State defense and special teams, including game winning interceptions for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State said on Monday that the senior safety was out for the season after an injury during practice last week.

Coach Franklin described it by saying "something kind of freaky happened."

Franklin said he talked with Keiser about his future, possibly chasing a dream of being in the NFL, or even coaching at Penn State.
