PALMYRA TOWNSHIP -- It wasn't long after the deadly ambush at the state police barracks in Pike County that tags started covering the walls at Lake Region IGA near Hawley.

The grocery store wanted to help raise money for the family of Corporal Bryon Dickson as well as for Trooper Alex Douglass. More than a month later, checks for thousands of dollars were given to troopers who worked alongside the two men.

"It`s unbelievable. Five plus weeks into things here there`s still community support going on," said Sergeant Brian Vennie, Pennsylvania State Police.

Customers donated a dollar for each one of those tags at the cash register, raising about $7,000. Another $5,000 was added by the store's wholesaler.

Sergeant Vennie's wife Traci says every dollar counts.

"This is how these families will survive. This is how they will put food on the table. This is how they will pay the bills and get through difficult times. And that hopefully with the help of all of us together coming together as a community," Traci Vennie said.

State police say Eric Frein took away much more than a public servant the night of September 12. He also took away the biggest provider for the Dickson family.

"Events like this where extra money coming in, what you need for family. Life insurance doesn`t cover everything," said Jim Shook, Lake Region IGA.

"It`s bigger than a shirt sale. This is our community reaching out to help our people," Traci Vennie said.
