ASHLEY -- As winter approaches, snowplow and salt truck drivers at PennDOT are concerned about their vehicles.

The department is looking for certified diesel mechanics, and can't find enough of them.

PennDOT believes it will have enough people to drive the snowplows and salt trucks when winter storms strike in the coming months, but who will keep the trucks running?

"They take a beating," said PennDOT mechanic Mike Myron.

Myron, of Mountain Top, has been a diesel mechanic for more than 40 years, the last five with PennDOT at its garage in Ashley.

"That truck will be running, it could be running 24/7.  It depends upon the hours, the storm, and the nature of the storm." Myron said.

This winter PennDOT is trying to make sure the pit crew for the plow drivers isn't too thin.

As it recruits extra drivers and diesel mechanics for the winter, PennDOT spokesman James May says the agency is getting enough qualified drivers, but not enough qualified diesel mechanics.

"Sometimes it's an issue of making the contacts and letting them know that it`s available.  We fully anticipate being able to fill these positions, but right now, we`re running short," May said.

PennDOT plans to push for trade school grads, seasonal construction workers, and even use the lighted warning signs you see on the highway to find more mechanics.

PennDOT is trying to get the word out about its need for diesel mechanics before the plows go on the front of its trucks.  The job starts at $18 an hour. That`s roughly $40,000 a year.

"Those are temporary positions, but those will often lead to a full-time position with PennDOT," said May.

"As long as I can do it, I know I've got a job," Myron said.

Myron says he'll be ready to work all the hours necessary when the snow hits.

He`s surprised there are well-paying jobs available, but just a few people stepping up to take them.
