BARRETT TOWNSHIP -- The search for Eric Frein is putting Halloween in jeopardy in parts of the Poconos.

A traditional trick or treat experience is out of the question for some kids this year, but plans are taking shape for a different type of celebration even as the search continues.

Even though, for several days, the most active searching has shifted south, the Eric Frein manhunt is changing the way folks in Barrett Township are celebrating Halloween.

The 50th annual parade won't happen until next year, but people are doing everything they can to make the holiday happy.

At Monsignor McHugh Elementary School, there will be a Trunk or Treat celebration on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.

"The trunks of their cars, the backs of their pickups. We have some that are bringing their motorcycles. I don't know how they are going to do that. They will pass out candy to the kids as they go around the circle to trick or treat," said Madeleine Forssell of the Halloween committee.

The event will feature activities for kids including games and pumpkin painting. At least 10 food vendors are also expected.

12-year-old Kalvin Jeffers came from Old Forge to help.

"They should be able to have fun because Halloween is, like, the most fun holiday," Jeffers said.

Even though the plan is coming together, blue ribbons around the area are a reminder that, during the manhunt, everything is subject to change.

That uncertainty could be felt at a daycare in Swiftwater, as officers could be seen with guns drawn just yards away.

"It's definitely nerve-racking. Looking over shoulder, never like that over here," said Jeanette Friday, Oxford Swiftwater Daycare supervisor.

The manhunt delayed buses in the Pocono Mountain School District on Monday. Parents were on edge waiting for their kids.

Nobody knows how long the manhunt will last, but they hope all the police activity is a sign of progress.

"I hope they catch him today. The sooner, the better."

Reservations are preferred for Trunk or Treat vehicles. Participants can call 570-595-3276.
