COAL TOWNSHIP -- The search is on to find the person who severely abused a dog in Northumberland County.

The animal was found earlier this month, muzzled with its throat slashed.

Authorities originally thought the dog might have been hurt in some sort of fighting ring but a veterinarian now says it looks like the dog's injuries were caused by a human.

"This is a heinous act committed against a sweet dog."

If dogs could talk this pit bull would have a lot to say. The dog investigators call Marshall a survivor. He was found on the side of Route 901 earlier this month just outside Shamokin.

"The dog was in pretty bad condition. It had several stab wounds and its throat was slit. It had a muzzle on it when they got it," said a humane officer with the Phoenix Rescue Group.

The humane officer investigating the case is doing undercover work and did not want to be identified. He says authorities originally thought there was a dog-fighting ring and while they are still investigating this, the veterinarian confirmed Marshall's injuries were caused by a human.

"This has got to be someone who has some kind of sickness. I mean, it has to be, because who in their right mind would go and attack a helpless dog with a muzzle?"

The investigator believes Marshall was someone's pet because he is friendly and knows commands like "sit" and "shake."

The vet says when Marshall was first brought in, his injuries were extremely serious, but now he's doing a lot better.

"It just broke my heart. I would love to find out who did this to him so they can be brought to justice."

Michael Liptok of Coal Township found the dog while driving on Route 901.

"I took notice that the muzzle was real tight on his face and he had wounds on him, like his throat was cut and it looked like pellet wounds along his back, but later we found out it was stab wounds."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Phoenix Rescue Group. They are offering a cash reward for information leading to the dog's owner.  Email them at rhollister@clear.net or call 717-226-1575.
