LONG POND-- For more than 20 years the black and white entrance at the Pocono Raceway has greeted fans as they arrive. But the familiar facade will soon be gone as part of a multimillion dollar renovation project.

"As my grandfather once said, when he is gone we can do it our way, we have enjoyed his way but now it is time for us to put our mark, our stamp on the place," said CEO Brandon Igdalsky.

The raceway's 50-year-old tunnel will be rebuilt with a higher ceiling, which will allow large equipment to be brought in more easily. Igdalsky hopes that opens up the venue to more non-racing events like the Warrior Run. Igdalsky also believes the addition of a pedestrian walkway will benefit businesses in the area.

"We will be able to partner with are businesses to offer excursions for our infield fans who are staying here, or even bring in people from the outside, they will now be able to walk through the tunnel, they have not been able to do that in the past," said Igdalsky.

The "star" sign at the entrance will also be removed but the stars honoring legends of the sport will be mounted in a new location.

A one million dollar Economic Growth Initiative grant will help pay for the improvements, but will cover less than half of the cost according to the CEO.

"The attraction supports more than 2,700 hundred jobs and has generated almost $15 million of tax revenue," said a portion of a statement from Governor Corbett's office.

In nearby Blakeslee, most of the people we met seemed to support the project.

"I think it's great, you want to bring more income into the area," said Edward Rasliewicz.

"It brings a lot of people into the area, and the area needs the tourism," said Penny Rudolph.

Work is expected to begin next week, and be complete in the spring.
