DICKSON CITY -- Robert Harris of Olyphant brought his granddaughters for an after-school ice cream snack. It's something he used to do with his dad at the same store. It just had a different name back then.

"It was the Carvel, yeah. Then they changed it. They did away with the Carvel, but I don't think most people realize it for the most part," Harris said.

Now it's called The Ice Cream Shoppe. No matter the name, ice cream has been served at that spot on Main Street in Dickson City for about 70 years.

Now, customers are greeted with a long message from the shoppe's owners. Their landlord didn't renew their lease for this year and the shoppe had to move.

They're moving only about a mile down the road to Peckville, into a business that had it's own unexpected problems. There was a fire at Lil Turtles restaurant earlier this year. The ice cream shoppe will move into this building and the owners hope to now be open 12 months a year.

The Ice Cream Shoppe's employees are a mainstay, too. They say that saying goodbye to the Dickson City shoppe will be a big change, but a good one.

"It's kind of like a second home, you know what I mean? I've been here for 16 years. It will be odd, but I think it is just like a blessing in disguise," said Christina Kura.

"We have plans for the other side, but we haven't disclosed them yet. One half will still be the ice cream store, the other half will be, something else. We're not exactly sure what it will be yet," said Mark Gifford.

The Ice Cream Shoppe plans to reopen in its new location just in time for ice cream season next year, by the spring of 2015.
