SCRANTON — A state lawmaker was involved in gunfire on the street in Harrisburg and people who Marty Flynn represents in Lackawanna County say they’re happy that he stood up for himself.

Many people who live in the 113th Legislative District which includes parts of Scranton and other areas in Lackawanna County were surprised to hear that their state representative fired his gun during an attempted robbery.

“I know Marty. He’s our legislative representative and I think a lot of him.”

State Representative Marty Flynn says he has a license to carry a gun and used it to defend himself and another state representative when they were approached by would-be robbers in Harrisburg.

Police say shots were exchanged but no one was hurt.

Flynn released a statement on the incident saying, “We are used to fighting for the people in our districts every day. We certainly are going to stand up for ourselves and not become victims.”

Newswatch 16 spoke with people who live in Flynn’s district and they say, if they were in that situation, they probably would have done the same thing.

“If I had a gun, I’d shoot them. You have to protect yourself. It’s terrible the way the world is; we live in a big cesspool,” said Scranton resident John Smith.

“Carrying is a right guaranteed by the second amendment and I think any person has the right to defend their self against bodily harm,” said a resident of Scranton.

“People need to stop doing this stuff, thinking they can get away with everything,” said another of Flynn’s constituents.

Others in Lackawanna County told us the representative should have called police before firing a shot, but Smith says he’s happy Flynn stood up for himself.

“Yeah, I’m proud of the guy.”

In a statement, Representative Marty Flynn said he was relieved nobody was struck by gunfire.

He also thanked the Harrisburg police for their work.
