Police Relentless In Search For Frein

BARRETT TOWNSHIP -- State police remain confident that they are searching in the right area of the Poconos for Eric Frein, the man wanted for an ambush outside the state police barracks in Pike County last month that killed one trooper and injured another.

State police have made it clear. They aren't leaving the area of Price and Barrett Township until Frein is found.

Their search continued Thursday in some of the same areas we've now seen them checking for the past three weeks.

K9 units and troopers checked along the Brodheadsville Creek for any signs of Frein. The alleged cop killer continues to evade police, now nearly four weeks into the search.

"It's taking a toll on everybody. It's taking a toll on the police department. it's taking a toll on the public," said Barrett Township Police Chief Steven Williams.

State police gathered in the same area off Route 447 in Price Township where they staged two days ago before taking off.

Later in the afternoon, nearly 30 state police cars caravanned up to the top of Snow Hill Road and lined the Delaware State Forest and began checking the state forest yet again.

Police say Frein was spotted Tuesday afternoon.

Local police are taking extra precautions as the search drags on.

Barrett Township officers now have special protective vests on top of the ones they usually wear, built to take a .308 caliber bullet.

"We're just trying to respond to our normal calls, trying to assist state police where we can when they're within Barrett Township and take it day by day," said Chief Williams.

The manhunt has now prompted Barrett Township to cancel trick-or-treating and the annual Barrett Township Halloween parade is postponed this year. It would have been its 50th celebration.

Supervisors said after meeting with local and state police calling off the events was the right call.

"It made it easy, it was hard, it was our 50th parade. The parade to Barrett Township is a huge event. I mean most of the town really comes out for the parade," said Barrett Township supervisor Ralph Megliola.

Others in Barrett Township buying PSP Strong t-shirts say they want answers, and they want to help.

"Well, that's the least of it. That's the least. I just don't want anyone else to be hurt," said Barrett Township resident Joann Giustra.

We asked state police if there had been new sightings of Frein or whether or not this massive operation is taking its toll on other operations and investigations, but we have yet to get answers to those questions.
