State Police Say Search Area Narrowing

BARRETT TOWNSHIP -- State police choppers were making passes over the "hotspot" as it's being called, the area near Eric Frein's home in Canadensis where investigators think he's hiding. They said they're acting on tips related to any bunkers or shelters Frein may have in the area, but as of now he's been able to elude hundreds of highly trained police for ten days and counting.

Route 447 was closed in that area, too, while marked and unmarked police cars rushed into the search area, described as heavily wooded, rocky, and rugged.

Some 20 miles away, near where troopers say Frein ambushed the Blooming Grove state police barracks, Governor Tom Corbett joined investigators Monday morning with an update on the manhunt, even though there was limited new information on the search.

"We have had some reports of sightings, we`re following up on those," said Lt. Col. George Bivens with state police. "If anything I would say the search area is narrowing."

"Other states have continued to offer assistance that we need, at this time there hasn`t been a need to do that. My fervent wish is that we conclude this as quickly as possible," Governor Corbett said.

This is now the fifth day life in this part of Monroe County has been turned upside down. Larry Tait of Delaware can't get back to his vacation cabin due to the all-out search for an accused cop-killer, one who police say has possibly been planning the attack and escape for years.

"Thursday night we`re out three hours. Friday night we couldn`t get back until 2 o`clock Saturday afternoon," said Tait.

Medical equipment vans were also forced to find another way in or to wait until this saga comes to a close.

"Depends if the equipment is not that big a deal, but if it`s oxygen, then it`s a big deal," said William Schlegel with Young's Medical Equipment.

State police say they're using all sorts of tech equipment to try to locate Frein and still believe he made the approximately 20 mile trek back to his own backyard.

Troopers believe Frein is focused on them, not the general public. Still, residents in the area are urged to stay on the lookout, lock their doors, and keep lights on outside.
