BLOOMING GROVE TOWNSHIP – Investigators said they recovered an AK-47 style rifle and ammunition from a 250 square-mile search area, as the manhunt continues for an alleged cop killer.

“Frein has prepared and planned extensively for months and maybe years. He planned his attack and his retreat,” said Lt. Col. George Bevins. "We are closing in on him. He is no longer safe.”

Although there were 911 calls of gunfire during the search areas, troopers said they have not yet seen Frein or exchanged any gunfire.

Bevins said hunter should stay out of the woods in Barrett and Price Townships, but said it will be up to school district administrators to decide if classes will be held on Monday.

According to Bevins, Trooper Alex Douglass has been interviewed about the ambush and is recovering in the hospital after several surgeries.

Stores that closed down on Saturday in nearby Mountainhome reopened on Sunday, but church services were cancelled at the Moravian and United Methodist Church in Canadensis.

People who live less than a mile away from Frein’s home told Newswatch 16 that they’re worried about the officers searching through the dense woods, as well as the suspect’s family.

“It’s all wooded he could be anywhere. You know, you don`t sleep at night,” said Joyce Aleckna. “I drive school bus here. I drove his sister to school and people are making attacks on their family, you know, it’s sad."

Some people who said they could not get to their homes during a 24-hour “shelter in place” order said they’re getting worried and frustrated.

"This has been what a week now? So it could go on longer if he`s gotten away,” said Jim Goucher. “I thought for sure they’d get him yesterday because there was gunfire."

During a news conference at the Blooming Grove Township Municipal Building, people at a roast beef dinner fundraiser at the fire hall next door said the manhunt is emotionally draining for many people in this part of the Poconos.

"I want it to be over as soon as possible. And hopefully they catch this guy and then everyone’s life can get back to normal,” said Teresa Borges.
