PIKE COUNTY -- Workers at a power line project in Wayne County called police Wednesday morning and troopers rushed to the area near Lake Wallenpaupack for reports of man seen in camouflage, with a gun, coming out of the woods.
More than an hour went by before state police called off the search, figuring it may have been a hunter in the area, but it was enough to leave neighbors shaken.
"I looked out and they had guns, then I saw a helicopter. It's a little scary," said Stacie Lynam.
Troopers then checked out a barn nearby to see if anyone was inside, guns drawn, being careful just in case the man they're looking for -- Eric Frein -- was waiting for them.
It's this sort of thing that leaves some parents worried about their kids.
"Scared, scared, I warned my kids if they did have to go to school today they should get off and on the bus as quick as possible. When you hear mass murder, little scary."
But Wallenpaupack Area schools were closed for the day. The superintendent says the call was made after finding out Tuesday that Frein's vehicle was found just down the road from the schools.
"The fact they found the vehicle, over the weekend, people didn't know if the individual had left the area, fleeing by other means, by finding vehicle in area, we at least know at some point he was on foot in the area," said Wallenpaupack Area Superintendent Michael Silsby.
With thousands of students plus teachers and staff to worry about, some think the district made the right call.
"I think it's for the safety of people involved, so many people wandering around you don't know who's who," said Kathleen Sidoskiof Milford.
