SCRANTON -- A procession Thursday morning will take Corporal Bryon Dickson to downtown Scranton for a funeral mass at St. Peter's Cathedral.
It will be quite a scene as this state and beyond says farewell and thank you, but there's a lot that goes into preparing for it, and making sure it is safe.
Dunmore borough workers spent hours walking the streets putting up flags. Hundreds of them will wave along the expected route carrying Cpl. Dickson to burial.
Flags were also going up to fly high above the streets where Cpl. Dickson will pass on his way here to Dunmore Cemetery.
And as the crews did their work, they thought of what it will mean for his family.
"Wait until you see the flags up in Dunmore tomorrow. It's going to be on the entire run. It's the least we could do," said Dunmore DPW Director Mike Judge.
This is personal for these Dunmore workers.
Dunmore is where Cpl. Bryon Dickson lived with his wife and two boys. His family was part of Dunmore, took part in youth sports and more there.
"Great guy, his wife's a great gal. They're nice people. It's a shame, but like I said, we're behind them 100 percent. Anything we can do for them, we'll do for them," said Judge.
The funeral itself will be at St. Peter's Cathedral in downtown Scranton. There are a lot of logistics involved in planning that, from closing streets to dealing with parking, and a big concern, security, all during a busy workday downtown.
"We would ask that the public have some patience with that for tomorrow."
No parking signs have gone up along Linden Street and Wyoming Avenue. Those streets in the area of the cathedral will also close at 6:30 a.m. Thursday.
Then there's all the law enforcement coming to honor their comrade, thousands of them. We're already seeing their presence at the viewing.
Scranton police and every police department in Lackawanna County will be securing the events tomorrow and that is a major task with a possible threat still on the loose.
"That is the goal of us, and all the law enforcement from areas coming in to assist, not only to honor Cpl. Dickson, but to keep the event safe," said Scranton Police Chief Carl Graziano.
While Scranton police say Wyoming and Linden will close in the morning, there will be many other streets closed at times before and after the funeral for the procession to and from Dunmore.
