SCRANTON -- Two men are dead after what police said was a murder suicide in the Pine Brook section of the city.

Police said it started as a dispute between neighbors and ended with one man being shot to death in the street and his killer committing suicide on a porch.

According to the coroner, Anthony Collins, 54, of Scranton died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.  His death is ruled a homicide.

Thomas Campion, 65, of Scranton died as a result of a single gunshot wound.  His death has been ruled suicide.

Stunned friends hugged in the street, shaken by the incident in their neighborhood.

Nick didn't want to give his last name but said the carnage started with a racial slur.

"The black man says, 'That is not a nice thing to say,' and he said, 'You don't say that to me.' The white man went upstairs and came out with a gun," Nick said.

Police said the shooter killed his neighbor right in the street.

"He shot the black man two or three times. I seen he was shot in the heart. I went up and checked the mans pulse," Nick said.

As one man lay dead neighbors called police, who rushed to the scene.

"When they responded to the scene here, the situation was still dynamic and the situation ended with the shooter taking his own life," said Scranton Police Chief Carl Graziano.

The chief said some of his officers actually saw the gunman kill himself after they responded to the first shooting.

"We thought it was fireworks and 15 to 20 minutes later we saw all these cops coming down," said Joseph Kujawski of Scranton.

Kujawski knew both the shooter and his victim and said he never saw any sign of trouble.

"Hanging in there, just trying to wrap my mind around it," Kujawski said.

Jessica Kujawski and her sister-in-law said the situation is impossible to comprehend. Two years ago the alleged gunman saved four members of their family from a fire.

"I couldn't believe it. He was a hero to us, to my mom, my sisters, and now he saved a life to take a life, and his own life," Jessica Kujawski said.
