HUGHESVILLE -- They weren't even born 13 years ago but third grade students are remembering the lives lost on 9/11.

The third grade classes at Ashkar Elementary School in Hughesville held a "Freedom Walk" on Thursday to commemorate 9/11.

Several students at Ashkar Elementary School in Hughesville say they got the idea for the Freedom Walk last spring after reading a book about something similar.

On Thursday morning, the entire third grade class walked through the hallways in front of the whole school remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

The third graders waved American flags as they remembered the lives lost on 9/11.

The school held its first ever Freedom Walk which was the idea of two students: Ellie Jones and Liam Turnbow.

"We thought it would be a great idea to do this in honor of the 9/11 attacks since we had just recently done a project on that," Ellie Jones said.

"They did all the planning, they wrote all the speeches, they've been preparing for this for the whole summer, really," said Principal Sherry Cowburn.

The third graders were not even alive during the terrorist attacks but they know all about what happened.

"I figured out that a plane crashed into it and I was like, 'that's horrible!' Mom told me about the monument and I said 'can I go see that one day?' She said 'sure,'" said co-organizer Liam Turnbow.

The third grade students walked through the school's hallways and waved flags to celebrate our nation's freedom and remember the lives lost on September 11. The rest of the school lined the halls and cheered them on.

This is the first year for the school's freedom walk, and the students say they plan to continue it every year. They say they hope it grows bigger and better each time.

The students say being able to walk through the hallways and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001 has a special meaning to them.

"It means, like, everything to me!' Ellie said.

"It means probably more than my life to me," added Liam.

School officials say the Freedom Walk was such a success they plan to make it an annual event. This is all thanks to a couple of elementary school students who wanted to remember the people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
