SCRANTON -- Some students spent Tuesday morning looking for a chance to give back to their community.

About 70 nonprofit groups and roughly 1,000 students showed up for the annual event at the university of Scranton.

For volunteer-run nonprofits like Friends of the Poor this is one of the best ways to recruit young, excited volunteers.

"It's very challenging, but it's also inspiring to see all of the people who want to give back," said Sister Ann Walsh with Friends of the Poor.

On Tuesday 40 students signed up to help Sister Walsh.

Organizers of the fair said the fair keeps getting bigger and bigger. More organizations want to be involved and more students want to help out.

"A lot of our agencies' staff have been cut and they need people more, and also our students have come to us with a lot of service experience and they want to continue," said University of Scranton Service Director Pat Vaccaro.

Freshman Emily Gardner has been volunteering most of her life for the nonprofit her mother runs.

"I wanted to continue that here to make it feel more like home," Gardner said.

She hopes to volunteer for several organizations and said having them all here in one place made things easy.

"It's crazy. It's so helpful. It's so wonderful to see all the different volunteer options that are available to us, and the choices are basically endless," said Gardner.

The agencies are now hoping their supply of volunteers is also endless.
