WASHINGTONVILLE — A primary care aide* at a nursing home in Montour County will spend 9 to 18 months in jail for doing an abortion without a medical license.

Jennifer Whalen of Washingtonville was sentenced on Friday.

According to court papers, Whalen ordered abortion pills online and gave them to a 16-year-old girl.

The girl took the pills in 2012 and had a miscarriage.

Whalen pleaded guilty to the crime last month in Montour County.

She was also fined $1,000 and must do 40 hours of community service after her release.

*9/8/14 — A previous version of this story mistakenly referred to Jennifer Whalen as a nurse. The story also included a graphic with the words “Registered Nurse Charged.” According to her attorney, Whalen is not a licensed nurse of any kind, but instead works as a primary care aide at a nursing home. Newswatch 16 regrets the error and apologizes for any confusion.
