HONESDALE -- Hundreds of volunteer firefighters will be marching through a community in Wayne County this weekend.

The annual volunteer firefighters' parade is being hosted by the Honesdale Fire Department.

At Hose Company # 1 in Honesdale, the guys were setting up to welcome their fellow firefighters who will be in town for the weekend.

The borough is hosting the annual Northeastern Pennsylvania Volunteer Firemen's Federation convention.

Fire companies from Wayne, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Susquehanna, Wyoming, Monroe and Pike Counties -- 88 in all -- have all been invited.

The convention will end with a parade down Main Street to honor the men and women who do so much more than fight fires.

“When these storms come through, we do weather-related, automobile accidents, we do searches, most people call the volunteers when they need help because they know we bring manpower,” said Jerry Theobald with Hose Company #1

Many others in Honesdale will be in the parade; the team from Dime Bank even made a float.

“It's very exciting, it's always nice to bring people into town to show them what a wonderful town we live in,” said Jean Birmelin, the manager at Dime Bank.

The workers at Elegante Pizzeria say the convention will be great for business.

“Saturday, we're going to be on Main Street at the fire house, selling pizza and those proceeds are going to go to the fire department and just doing our part,” said Joe Armetta.

And the firefighters say the parade is also a chance to hopefully recruit new members, something that they say is becoming more difficult each year.

“We are on the constant lookout for new volunteers, so this is our way of reaching out to different communities and it's a statewide problem with different fire companies,” said Jerry Dulay.

The parade is at 3 p.m. Saturday. Main Street in Honesdale will be shut down during the festivities.
