COAL TOWNSHIP — State police in Northumberland County said they are investigating the attempted killing of a correctional officer at the state prison near Shamokin.
According to police, an inmate put the officer in a choke hold in the prison yard Sunday morning and tried to slash the officer’s neck with some sort of weapon.
The officer was able to fight him off and suffered only minor injuries to his neck, face, head, hands, and back. He was treated and released at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital.
The inmate was transferred to another correctional facility.
State police in Northumberland County have not released the names of the inmate or the correctional officer.
