Two People Found Dead Inside Hazleton Home

HAZLETON — Police and the Luzerne County coroner’s office are trying to learn what led to an apparent murder-suicide.  Two bodies were discovered Sunday night in a home on Penn Court.

Police were called just after 8 p.m. Sunday, after a report of a couple found “unresponsive.” Officers found a man and a woman dead.

Neighbors say this is where Wayne and Michelle Volciak lived, and the county coroner says this where they died.

Jessica Smith was their neighbor for four years.

“They were really nice people. They seemed so normal. Family picnics, they seemed so happy and normal,” Smith said.

Smith says Wayne, a former state employee, will be remembered for his lawn and garden skills, the way he kept his property neat and clean, plus his love of polka music.

Michelle had a cake baking business, called “Michelle’s Creative Cakes.” Some of her work was on her web site and Smith said she recently had a chance to sample one of Jessica’s cakes.

“They were excellent,” said Smith. “Michelle made them. Pudding icing, just made one for my mom’s 70th birthday. They were really nice, awesome people.”

The coroner tells us they believe Wayne shot Michelle.

Smith says there was never a sign of trouble here, so what happened was clearly a shock.

“Jessica Smith was their neighbor for four years.Michelle had a cake baking business, called “Michelle’s Creative Cakes.” Some of her work was on her web site and Smith said she recently had a chance to sample one of Jessica’s cakes.” You mean one of Michelle’s cakes. No?

Sounds Fishy to me. A Former State Employee? Was he retired and receiving that big fat juicy retirement check.? The wife was running a small business making extra income? Just sounds Fishy when a Normal Couple are murder and suicide.

What the heck is the matter with you people? What does the fact that he was a state worker have anything to do with this? It is such a tragedy when this happens.

What are you suggesting? The state sent out a hit team to make sure they would not have to pay his pension? You need help.

I definently agree with you. We know nothing of what happens behind the doors of the White House or pentagon. Maybe he knew a secret and they just took him out and made it seem like a mureder/suicide. The neighbors did say they were a happy and normal couple. This wouldn’t have been much of a surprise if they would have said the exact opposite.

Do you people read your own reports? Not only was this a horrible article, focusing on cake-baking and love of Polka music, but you say that the neighbor Jessica Smith just had a chance to sample one of “Jessica’s” cakes. First you broadcast the names of the victims before all of the family was notified and now this stupid updated piece…WNEP is going downhill quickly.

This really doesn’t feel right. I feel like their hiding something. He did used to work for the state. Now a sudden death? My condolences to their family.

The police won’t say who they are? Maybe there are family members who haven’t been notified as of yet. However that didn’t stop you from broadcasting the victims’ names on your morning news. Imagine a relative just waking up and finding out about this from the TV news.

If it wasn’t a random act of violence, then perhaps murder/suicide or an accidental death, like from a gas leak. I do agree with FRATBOY – more details please when stories like this are released.

Please don’t let these reporters do the interview if something happens to me.
“Smith says Wayne, a former state employee, will be remembered for his lawn and garden skills, the way he kept his property neat and clean, plus his love of polka music.”

      Really???

You don’t know who died or how? Investigative journalism, at its best. Here’s an idea, ask the cops!!! They won’t tell you? Maybe because you screw-up so many stories and insert your own opinions that they don’t trust you. Back in my day, I stood next to the investigating officer and coroner when cause is estimated.
