LIBERTY TOWNSHIP -- Holiday weekends are known as some of the busiest traveling days of the year and this Labor Day was no exception. Many people spent the day returning home from their holiday weekend destinations.
Labor Day weekend is a busy time to be out on the roads. In fact, AAA estimated close to 35 million Americans traveled 50 miles or more from home during Labor Day weekend.
"It's 1,000 miles from our house up to New Jersey where we were. Then to Massachusetts another 300, so back again, 1,600. It's going to be a good 2,500 miles before we get home, I would think," said Florida resident Beverly McCormick
"About six hours, yeah, close to 400 miles, I believe. It's brutal," said Ohio resident Greg Makoski.
"We have a long way to go!" added Cindy Secord.
Secord and her husband made a pit stop at a rest stop along Interstate 80 near Danville. They have a 9-hour drive back to Michigan.
"My daughter married into a Scranton family and we came down for their annual picnic and just had a blast!"
The travelers Newswatch 16 spoke with say they appreciate the lower gas prices this year.
"Gas isn't bad. I think it cost us $90 there and back," Makoski said.
Many travelers say they appreciate seeing something like this when they come to rest areas: a free food and coffee stand run by a Boy Scout troop from Turbotville.
"It's for a good cause, the Boy Scouts, right? We just give out as much food as you guys want to take and you just put in as much money as you want," said Aaron Merwin of Turbotville.
AAA estimates this year's Labor Day weekend will be the highest volume of travel nationwide since 2008.
