SUNBURY -- Customers dump bags of trash at Sunbury Municipal Authority's Transfer Station. The trash and recycling facility is a little dusty right now because it is going through renovations.
Manager Mike Kerstetter said the transfer station was built in 1983 and it is time to expand it. Once construction is finished there will be eight stalls for customers to dump trash instead of three.
"Which should alleviate the delays of using the facility. It will get them in quicker and get them out quicker," Kerstetter said.
Kerstetter said this is a $2.5 million project paid for by a loan and state grant money.
Plans for the facility's expansion show separate traffic lanes for the trash and recycling centers.
Kerstetter says the customers currently use one lane. The new plan will ease traffic congestion.
"We're making it safer for the people who recycle. They won't have to mix in with the transfer station flow," Kerstetter said.
Kerstetter said they used to process recyclables somewhere else, but now they will do it right here.
The manager believes the addition to the recycling plant will not only generate more money, but save money in the long run.
"Where we generate money there is the product is worth more in a bale than it is loose. We won't have to transport them anymore, they'll come pick them up," Kerstetter said.
Customers said they look forward to the renovations.
"I think it's wonderful that they're making more room because you used to wait in line real long," Deborah Poust said.
"It would be so congested here and now that they're expanding it and developing it, it's going to be really nice," Louvonne Smith said.
The project is expected to be finished by April of next year.
