NEW MILFORD -- The New Milford pool in Susquehanna County has been open to the public in the borough since the 1950's.

The wear and tear of six decades is starting to show.

"We need a new filter system, a new lining in the pool, the tiles are slipping as you can see," said Kelsey Wages, a lifeguard at the pool.

New Milford officials estimate the necessary repairs will cost about $7,000.

The council said, if they can't get that money by next spring, the pool might have to be drained for good.

"I would be devastated. I love my job. I know all these kids love coming here. It would be horrible if they shut down,"  said Wages.

People in the New Milford area say this pool could use some improvements, but these kids who use it say they want it open.

Mackenzie Conboy from Montrose said, "I wouldn't be happy. This is a fun pool!"

There is a $2 fee to use the pool right now, but council members don't plan to charge more.

The council is looking into grants and is also hoping for community donations.

"I don't want to see it go. There's a lot of work that needs to be done, but we want it," said Kathy Wages, a New Milford Borough Council Member.

Lifeguards said the pool should be open until Labor Day this year, and the kids plan to take full advantage of that.

If you'd like to donate, you can contact the New Milford Borough at 570-465-3394.
