CHERRY RIDGE TOWNSHIP -- There was no other place a few hundred folks "wood" have rather been Wednesday than a campground in Wayne County.

It was one of the biggest conventions for wood carvers in the entire country.

On the third and final day of the Northeast Woodcarvers Roundup near Honesdale, the pros and novices showed no sign of letting up.

Some 250 people whittled the day away at Cherry Ridge Campgrounds for now the 12th year of the roundup. Instructors like Mary Weinheimer of Florida travel a long way to share in their passion for turning wood into something unique.

"If you have a sharp knife, good wood, and someone to help you, it's an easy thing to pick up," she said.

The Cherry Ridge Carvers Club hosted the roundup where folks can learn new techniques, different skills, and share in the company of people who share the love of this hobby.

"It's a passion these guys have for sharing and sharing a skill, trying to keep it going," said Bob Muller of the Cherry Ridge Carvers Club.

Brothers Cris and Ryan Forelli from Damascus have been joining in the roundup since they were old enough to hold a carving tool. They're part of the younger generation that will carry on carving, teaching others the skills they learned here.

"It helps me think, if I'm stressed out doing schoolwork I take out a block of wood and carve," said Cris Forelli.

And while the last block of wood has been carved for this year's roundup, the question now: Where to put all those pieces of wood?

"In my closet, on shelves, where I can look at them," said his brother Ryan.
