SHAMOKIN -- Nearly 400 people from all over the country are spending the week sprucing up homes in lower Northumberland County.

Randy Adams of Shamokin looked on as volunteers painted his home of more than 40 years.

"I'm 70 years old and I hate to paint. I'm not going to be painting much anymore," Adams said.

The volunteers were from a nationwide group called Group Cares Workcamp. It is a Christian group which holds mission trips all over the country, like this one in Northumberland County.

"Spend the week there, working during the day, free time and some good devotions at night and then do it all over again the next day," Candy Taylor said.

Organizers said close to 400 people came from all over the country, and they are sprucing up more than 60 homes here in lower Northumberland County.

"Trim painting, to replacing porches, building wheelchair ramps, replacing stairs, roofing jobs," Taylor said.

Grasyn Waisner of North Carolina is one of those volunteers. She and her friends said they enjoy spending part of their summer volunteering.

"It's a good thing to do for them and I see it back at my hometown so I wanted to do something for people," Waisner said.

Volunteers paid their own way here, which also included the cost of construction materials. Low income, elderly, and disabled homeowners fill out forms at their local municipal building to be added to the list.
