June 2014 was the hottest June on record, according to the latest global report issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This week the National Climatic Data center released its global report for the month of June.

According to NOAA scientists, the average temperature across the globe, both over land and ocean surfaces was the highest for June since record keeping began in 1880.

According to the report, “Most of the world experienced warmer-than-average monthly temperatures, with record warmth across part of southeastern Greenland, parts of northern South America, areas in eastern and central Africa, and sections of southern and southeastern Asia.”

The report went on saying, “The combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces for June 2014 was the highest on record for the month, at 0.72°C (1.30°F) above the 20th century average of 15.5°C (59.9°F).

This means last month’s average global temperature was 61.2 degrees.

While many areas saw record heat across the globe, June this year was right around average for Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. Most of the month remained in the 80’s, and we also had several days in the 70’s and at least one day in the 60’s!

For the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area the average temperature in June was about 80 degrees. Typically during the month of June, the average high temperature is between 75-81 degrees.

Here is a map showing the monthly temperature percentiles for the month of June. You can also see this map on this website.
