WEST PITTSTON — People in Luzerne County got on the diamond to benefit a local charity Saturday.
The Miles for Michael annual softball tournament was held at the West Pittston Little League Complex. The charity is named after businessman Michael Joyce from Duryea who died of cancer in 2007.
The money raised goes to travel funds for families of cancer patients. The idea came from Joyce himself during his battle with the disease.
“He was so fortunate to have so many people help him out that he wouldn’t accept any of the money. Instead, he asked us to start this organization so that all of the people he met on his travels that were alone could have their family members with them,” said Mary Rossi with the Miles for Michael organization.
