WEST PITTSTON – People who live on a dead-end street told Newswatch 16 that tires on several cars were slashed around the same time that a duplex was intentionally set on fire over the weekend.

Investigators said someone set one side of the building on fire late Saturday night, and another fire was set several hours later.

Video from a Newswatch 16 viewer shows flames shooting from the windows of the duplex on Foundry Street which was up for sale.

Neighbors said the crime over the holiday weekend is unusual in the quiet neighborhood.

“Crazy. You can’t trust people I guess,” said Ben George.

Other people who live nearby said they hope the burned out building will be torn down soon.

“Animals will live in there. The kids that hang out and get hurt. The smell is already starting to get to us, the smell from the burnt wood. I could smell it as soon as I got up the first day,” said Tom Supey. “It doesn’t fit, you know what I’m saying? Seems like something fishy there to me I don’t know.”

Authorities have not yet filed charges for the arson case, or said if the reports of slashed tires are connected.
