BERWICK -- It's a big weekend along the Susquehanna River in part of Columbia County.
There's a carnival right along the water and boat races on the river itself, and all of it is meant to raise money to reopen a public pool in the Berwick area.
All the bouncing, riding, and fun this weekend at the carnival at the Riverfront Test Track park in Berwick is happening so there can be summertime fun for years to come at Berwick's Ber Vaughn Park pool.
"It's a great cause. We've been working for it for a long time. We're very excited about it," said Samantha Piasecki of Berwick.
Piasecki brought the kids to the carnival just after it opened. They want the pool reopened, too.
"I want it!" said Mackenzie Switzer.
"This is an ongoing effort. We've been trying to save the pool for the last two years. This is going to be our largest event for the year. We expect with the donation from parking to raise $10,000," said Ginny Crake with the Berwick Area United Way.
The $5 for parking is all it costs to get into this carnival. 20 percent of sales from all the vendors goes to the save the pool organization's effort.
"We're hoping to raise $1.7 million right and that's for the big dream pool and that's the hope that we open it into an awesome water park for our area," Crake.
Another thing about this carnival, you don't have to wait until September to get the foods you love at the Bloomsburg Fair. Some of those vendors are there with their food now.
"It's noon, we have it all to ourselves. We're having a fantastic time," Piasecki said.
A big draw to the carnival along the river comes on the river itself Saturday and Sunday. It certainly won't be tranquil like it looks now.
Dozens of little boats will be roaring and racing. A regatta is taking over the Susquehanna.
Longtime racer and Berwick native William Walker told us what to expect.
"A lot of speed, maybe a few flips."
He's happy it's helping with the pool effort and thrilled the regatta is returning.
"I've worked on that for five years. We used to have Berwick races in the 50s and 60s and they just went away so we're bringing them back," Walker said.
