SUNBURY -- The family of a father and son who were killed in a crash in Northumberland County showed solidarity in court on Thursday when the person responsible for the wreck was sentenced.

Close to three dozen family members and close friends of Kirk and Mayson Mahaffey were in Northumberland County court to show their support.

Most of them were wearing T-shirts with pictures of the father and son who were killed by a drunk driver almost two years ago near Sunbury.

That driver was sentenced to six to 20 years in prison.

More than 30 family members of Kirk and Mayson Mahaffey walked into the Northumberland county courthouse in Sunbury to learn the fate of Brian Glass.

Authorities say two years ago, Glass was driving drunk and swerved into Mahaffey's lane on the Veteran's Memorial Bridge near Sunbury, killing the young father and son.

Kirk was 22 and Mayson, only 3.

"He's only 3 years old and didn't have a chance to live his life. That's devastating right there," said Kirk's aunt Thenda Perez.

Last month, Glass pleaded guilty but mentally ill to two counts of homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence. Glass says he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder related to time served in the military.

A judge took that into account when he sentenced Glass to six to 20 years in prison.

"I know people get more years than that for less things. i know it's not going to bring my grandchildren back, but I think he should have been punished a little harder," said Kirk's grandmother Mary Heller.

"We won't ever have my brother and my nephew back, so no matter what the sentence is, it's pointless, really," said Kirk's sister Nicole Mahaffey.

Around three dozen family members and some close family friends came to the sentencing to show their support for Kirk and Mayson.

"I have a huge family. (This is) all family and some good family friends but they're big supporters of us," Mahaffey said.

During the sentencing, Glass turned around and apologized to the family, saying, "not a day goes by that I don't think about Kirk and Mayson. I hope you can forgive me."

"It didn't mean anything. Right before he did that, he had a big smile on his face."

The Mahaffey family tells Newswatch 16 that since the deadly crash, they've made it their mission to teach people about DUI prevention.

They even hold an annual memorial bike ride for Kirk and Mayson, with all proceeds going to a children's charity.
