EDWARDSVILLE -- If you're looking for something to do this weekend, and if you're hungry, the first ever Edwardsville Pierogi Festival is now underway in Luzerne County.
Organizers hope that it's successful enough this weekend to bring it back next year.
Organizers and vendors say they want to give people a reason to visit downtown Edwardsville.
As the tents went up, pierogis are dropping down into the pot, cooking up something delicious for Edwardsville's first-ever pierogi festival.
"I think it's going to be great. I hope so. It's going to be awesome. "
Debbie Konefal Rodgers of Konefal's Restaurant is one of the vendors cooking for the festival. She says it took her and a coworker two weeks to roll 2,000 pierogis for this weekend.
"There is (a secret something that goes into the recipe) and I can't tell you because it is a secret. It's actually an old family recipe, so I can't tell you that," Rodgers said.
Whatever it is, she hopes it's enough to win the pierogi cookout that will happen Saturday at 1p.m.
Newswatch 16's Tom Williams is one of the celebrity judges.
Aside from the cook-off, there will be a parade, vendors, and fun stuff for the kids.
Vendors are hoping the streets will be filled with people this weekend, not only so they can show off their pierogies, but so that people come to downtown Edwardsville.
"There's a lot of Polish descent in this borough, as well as Welsh and Irish and everything. But we figured Plymouth has kielbasi and Pittston has tomato. Why can't Edwardsville have pierogies?" explained organizer Jacke Moran.
The festival runs through 10 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
