Strawberry season is in full swing in Pennsylvania, and farmers in Central PA say this year it is right on time. Strawberry fields are packed with pickers this week. Strawberry picking is a family affair for the Chartowich family of Bloomsburg.

"My four kids, my mom and me," Lynn Chartowich said.

Lynn Chartowich brought her family to The Green Barn Berry Farm near Muncy, where picking season started on Monday.

"The kids love it. They have their own buckets and they can pick their own. My mom likes it because she can come and see the grand kids play," Chartowich said.

Owner Robyn Schreiber said her farm has six acres of strawberries. Some people feared the cold winter would delay strawberry season this year, but not here. She hopes for more sunshine, but says there have been plenty of pickers anyway.

"They seem to be polluted with berries. The bees have been very busy pollinating when the sun was out, so there's a lot of berries on and there are oodles of berries to come yet," Schreiber said.

Al Pavis of Riverside filled up his basket pretty fast.

"We're picking for her mother in law to make jelly and we're picking for us to eat," Pavis said.

Pavis says there is a special technique to picking strawberries.

"My mother in law used to say you have to pick the small ones to make jelly. That gets old really quick, so you start that way and you end up getting the big ones to fill the box," Pavis said.

If you come here in about two and a half weeks you won't only be able to pick strawberries, you'll also be able to pick blueberries and raspberries.

"We have early varieties of blueberries. We typically pick the whole month of July," Schreiber said.

Schreiber anticipates strawberry season to last another two to three weeks. The Green Barn Berry Farm is located on Armstrong Road near Muncy.
