MILTON -- A community in Northumberland County is remembering a World War II veteran who died after being hit by a vehicle. The 93-year-old man was called a legend in Milton.

He died Wednesday after he was hit walking across a street Tuesday in Milton.

He was not only a World War II veteran, but a longtime teacher who left generations of students with lots of memories.

Bob Izer made quite an impact on the people of Milton and that is evident by the amount of people who knew him.

His friends and former colleagues refer to Izer as a respected veteran, and an all-around great person who was involved with many non-profit groups throughout his 93 years.

It is hard to find someone in Milton who does not know Bob Izer.

"Bob definitely is a legend in this town," Jean Machamer said.

Longtime friends of the 93-year old World War II veteran gathered at the Milton American Legion to share memories of him.

"I never heard him say a bad word about anybody," Jack Blotts said.

"I had him as a teacher, I had him as a customer, and I had him as a friend. We went around to different veterans organizations together and got ourselves in trouble many a times," laughed Leroy Hauck.

"Happy go lucky. Always had something joke to say," Blotts said.

Authorities say Bob Izer died after being hit by a truck on South Front Street.

According to Milton police, Izer was leaving Keystone Care Physical Therapy and was attempting to cross the street to go over to his parked car when he was hit by a truck.

"Can't be, I told myself it can't be," Hauck said.

"I don't think it was Bob's fault. Bob was pretty cautious," Blotts said.

Friends say the former marine was a teacher in Milton for more than 40 years.

"He taught three generations of my family. He taught me, he taught my children, and he taught my granddaughter," Machamer said.

Friends say Izer served on various boards of non-profits in the community. He even has a street named after him by the baseball field in Milton.

"There isn't anybody that Bob didn't know or that didn't know Bob," Machamer said.

Police are investigating the crash, and are not yet sure if charges will be filed against the driver of the truck.

Bob's friends said he leaves behind a wife, two kids, hundreds of students, and an entire community.
