WILLIAMSPORT -- Historic Bowman Field in Williamsport has been around for decades, but on opening night Friday, fans will see a big change: the stadium has a new name.
Bartush Sign Company's crane lifted a big sign into place. It shows off the new name of the Williamsport Crosscutters' home field.
“Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field is the new official name of the old Historic Bowman Field," said Gabe Sinicropi, Vice President of the Williamsport Crosscutters.
City officials say they negotiated with the bank and wanted to keep the Historic Bowman name in the title. After a year, they agreed on the 5-year, $150,000 naming agreement which was announced this week. It's just in time for this Friday’s opening night.
“It means the stadium the city is getting more money every year to be put into stadium upgrades and maintenance.”
Officials say this year the money will help pay off a roofing project just completed. One man we spoke with notices the changes. He is glad they are improving the stadium.
“Oh, my gosh, yeah, major improvements here. It looks nice here,” said Richard Schneider
That's not the only improvement. The maintenance crew was out, painting, washing, and raking. They were making sure the stadium was cleaned up for Friday's opening game.
“Oh, yeah, just the games. I love them,” said Daniel Grimes of Williamsport.
Grimes stopped by the stadium to pick up his tickets for opening day. He's been coming to games for nearly 30 years. He's not bothered by the name rights to the park.
“Probably need money and stuff for advertising. It`s pretty cool,” said Grimes.
Other say it does make a difference.
"I think it takes away from the historical part of it," said Schneider.
Opening night at Susquehanna Bank Park at Historic Bowman Field is Friday. The Crosscutters will play the State College Spikes. Gates open at 6 p.m.
