WILKES-BARRE -- Monsignor Donald McAndrews celebrated 60 years of priesthood with an anniversary mass at Saint Aloysius in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday.
"I've loved every minute of it. I would not change anything and so I thank god for a wonderful," said McAndrews.
The monsignor, which is an honor granted by the pope, was ordained in 1954.
McAndrews said he's seen many changes in the Catholic church over the years.
"I think the modernization of the church, especially Pope Francis, really benefiting the church," said the Monsignor.
McAndrews is also known for his work outside the church.
As the executive director of Catholic Social Services of Wyoming Valley, he said the organization has helped 18,000 families.
Friends of the monsignor said his work is what keeps the 85-year-old young at heart.
"It's the grace of god and good genes," said Bishop James Timlin.
McAndrews spent more than two decades at Saint Aloysius in Wilkes-Barre. He said this Luzerne County community became like family.
"With their backing and support, it turned into a great big parish and the largest in Wilkes-Barre," said McAndrews
Timlin said, "He's been known as the priest of Luzerne County because he's been down here for so long and so active down here. "
"He did a lot. He did a lot for our community, for all of our people. He's a good man," said Gerald Gabriel from Dallas.
McAndrews is retired from giving mass on a regular basis, but said he loves to help out at different parishes whenever he can.
As for what's next for the 85-year-old, he says that's in God's hands.
