BRIAR CREEK TOWNSHIP -- Its water is green. It's home to ducks and tadpoles and other stuff.
But the Ber Vaughn pool in Ber Vaughn Park near Berwick may soon reopen after two years of still waters.
"As far as I know, I think the underground plumbing was leaking in it. So Berwick borough shut the pool down," said Berwick Area Pool Authority vice president Joshua Kishbaugh.
The Berwick Area Pool Authority took control of the pool two years ago, and teamed up with the United Way to save it.
Now they're diving into an estimated $1.7 million fundraising campaign.
They've entered the "Ultimate Giveback Challenge" which is a contest on Facebook to win $50,000 and a day with designer Ty Pennington.
Swimmers, including Erica Szpynda, hope people will vote and donate.
"I just remember coming here and learning how to swim, taking swimming lessons, jumping off the diving board for the first time," said Erica Szpynda of Salem Township.
This is where Szpynda got her start with swimming. She later broke a record for the Berwick Area High School swim team and got her first job as a lifeguard there.
"As you can see, there's a lot of unused space here, and the swimming authority is hoping that with this money, they'll not only be able to clean up the pool, but turn this whole area into a water park,"
Plans include replacing the two smaller pools with splash pads and slides.
"They wanted something attractive, and so we're creating an attractive water park that will draw people to our town and to this place," said Ginny Crake, Berwick Area United Way CEO.
Upcoming fundraisers include boat races, duck derbies, and carnivals.
