MOUNT CARMEL -- Visintainer's Motel, at Fourth and Maple Streets in Mount Carmel closed about three years ago. But this is where a woman told police she was sexually assaulted inside one of the rooms. Mount Carmel police said the woman told them she left a bar nearby, and a man followed her. Investigators believe a window at the motel was unlocked.

The woman was taken to the hospital with a fractured skull. They are investigating the case as a possible sexual assault.

"It is too close for comfort. It's a scary thing to happen in a town that you live in," Barbara Rizzo said.

Neighbors told Newswatch 16 they are scared for their safety. They said they don't normally lock their doors, but they do now.

"That's right up around the corner from me and to think something like that happened. It's sad. I mean, this is such a nice community," Mary Hitzeman said.

Mount Carmel police said they spent hours at Visintainer's Motel investigating the reported assault. Police said the woman told them she did not know the man. People who live in the area are nervous.

"I don't want them around, whoever they are. I'm not going to go walking at night," Hitzeman said.

"I hope they catch whoever did this and they have to pay the price," Rizzo said.

Police said the woman will probably be released from the hospital in the next day or so. There are no suspects at this point, and officers said they believe it was a random assault. Police said people should not panic, just lock their doors and be observant.
