WILKES-BARRE – The Luzerne County Coroner said the investigation into the death of a woman has been reopened, one day after authorities said her house was intentionally set on fire.

Authorities now say the fire at Laurie Merritt’s home on Wyoming Street in Wilkes-Barre last month is a case of arson.

The coroner’s office had previously ruled the well-known mail carrier’s death as an accident, but the coroner said the manner of death is now listed as pending.

The Luzerne County coroner told Newswatch 16 that law enforcement officials did not provide his office with updates on the case before he made his ruling.

Criminal charges have not yet been filed in the case.
