MONROE COUNTY - Folks were out enjoying the unofficial start to summer in the Poconos this Memorial Day.  One of the hot spots - Smithfield Beach at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.

Boat, after boat, after boat -

It was full steam ahead on the river - here in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for the unofficial start to summer.

"It is beautiful, it is absolutely beautiful, just to be out here on the river and watch the wildlife," said Kim Terwilliger of East Stroudsburg.

Terwilliger and her husband Mike, of East Stroudsburg, launched their boat into the Delaware River - ready to enjoy some fishing and sunshine after what seemed like a never-ending winter.

"We've got dealt one of the most beautiful days of the spring right now, we can't wait to launch this boat and get on the river," said Mike Terwilliger of East Stroudsburg.

Many kids and families kicking back in the Poconos came from New York and New Jersey for the Memorial Day Holiday, saying this is the perfect spot to kick back & grill up some good food.

Others took to the trails - biking as far as their legs would take them.

"It was a very cold winter, felt like a bear in hibernation. Finally now it's beautiful, getting out enjoying the outdoors," said Joe Leone of Bushkill.

From boating to biking, and even barbecuing, all of those out here enjoying Smithfield Beach say they're also remembering exactly Memorial Day is all about.

Vinnie Mitchell of Pocono Lake says he had his best morning ever in 50 years fishing on the Delaware - but says it's all thanks to those who serve our country. And have paid the ultimate price.

"It's because of them that I'm able to do things like this with my family, we come out here all together," said Mitchell of Pocono Lake.

Other boaters along the Delaware couldn't agree more.

"Those guys that made the ultimate sacrifice is what it's all about, the guys that wear the uniform we take a lot of pride in, and fortunate to have the ability we have on Memorial Day," said Terwilliger.
