HAWLEY -- The true meaning of memorial day weekend was not forgotten on Sunday in parts of Wayne County.

A parade in the afternoon in Hawley paid tribute to the men and women who fought and died for their country.

There were national guardsmen and people representing branches of the military that fought in wars dating back to the start of this country.

Veterans themselves said it's an important time to remember the ones they lost at battle.

"It's a day of remembrance to come to this parade day before memorial, and to remember the many guys from 2nd battalion 9th marines and 3rd marines that didn't come home that I served with in Vietnam," said Joseph Davis, Vietnam veteran.

"Memorial day is to honor all of those people who didn't return from korea, I was one of the lucky ones that did, I'm happy for it, we have to remember the ones that didn't," said Bob Kissinger, Korean War veteran.

Marching bands and floats took part in the memorial weekend parade Sunday in Wayne County.
