WILKES-BARRE -- The former head of the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority was sentenced Friday morning for theft of services.

Fred DeSanto was sentenced in Luzerne County court to 12 months of house arrest with electronic monitoring, followed by three years of probation.

DeSanto was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and serve 300 hours of community service.

The judge also ordered DeSanto to write a letter within five days, asking the Little League association to take his name down from signs at a Little League facility that bears his name.

Court records indicate that longtime former director of the Wyoming Valley Sanitary Authority sent sewer crews to do around $30,000 worth of work at the Pittston Township Little League field near DeSanto’s home.

A criminal investigation into DeSanto began in 2012. He was charged in September 2013.

Court records say 22 sewer authority workers told investigators that DeSanto stole services for two decades but because of the statute of limitations, he could only be charged for accusations within the past 10 years.
