Massive Coal Refuse Fire Finally Out

FELL TOWNSHIP — A coal refuse fire in Lackawanna County has finally been extinguished.

According Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection officials, the fire was spotted last year near Carbondale, but they believe the fire may have been burning for years.

DEP officials put the cost of fighting the fire at over $2 million.
