PITTSTON – Teachers and parents are organizing fundraisers and a vigil for a first grade student who is recovering a crash last week.

Authorities said Peyton Rusyn was rushed to the hospital after the sedan she was riding in slammed into the back of a UGI truck on South Main Street last Wednesday.

According to a Facebook page, the seven year old is recovering after surgery at Geisinger Medical Center near Danville.

Peyton’s first-grade teacher said the crash was difficult to explain to young students.

"She is so eager to learn. She really is the light of my classroom. So not having her there is very hard on us. But she is an excellent student and such a great spirit,” said Amanda Knowles. “All of the classes made cards for her so she has them when she is able to read them.”

Parents said they are placing orders for t-shirts, designed by Peyton’s twin brother.

"I think it’s great. They`re selling the t-shirts that her brother Preston designed for her,” said Christine Webb. “We`re going to purchase them for our family.”
