WRIGHT, Wyo. — Storm chasers in Wyoming captured amazing photos and video of a supercell thunderstorm forming May 18, 2014.
Basehunters, a stormchasing group from Norman, Okla., posted the timelapse video above on YouTube.
The National Weather Service defines supercells as, “highly organized storms characterized by updrafts that can attain speeds over 100 miles per hour, able to produce extremely large hail and strong and/or violent tornadoes, downdrafts that can produce damaging outflow winds in excess of 100 mph – all of which pose a high threat to life and property.”
Tom Clark, Stormtracker 16 Chief Meteorologist, points out that the greenish color you see in the cloud comes from sunlight passing through a massive build-up of ice and large hailstones.
